Warner Music cut costs with d2mondo

The Overtones are a vocal harmony group who
signed to Warner Music in mid-2010 and have been creating quite a buzz ever
since, both in the mainstream media and online. We spoke to Pip Day, Digital Co-ordinator, and he said said one key element in the Overtones online success has been the website. This is what he had to say about using d2mondo.

"The main reason for our decision to work with D2mondo on this was the cost saving. We have effectively built a site with all of the functionality of one we would brief to a web agency but with none of the cost.

The simple CMS allows you to move modules around and add them with ease, so our design is fully customised ….and if we ever needed assistance or wanted some extra function, the d2mondo staff responded promptly and were happy to oblige! A detailed set of tutorial videos were also provided and our digital department had the site up and running in a matter of days.

The CMS is also simple to update, so both management and PR are now regularly updating the site too. Videos and news stories take a matter of minutes to add and the interface allows Metadata to be added on all content seamlessly.

We were also extremely impressed by the platforms CRM functionality. Allowing users to sign up has encouraged interaction on all of the content and we have been able to extract quality data for newsletters and future marketing campaigns.

The finished product is personal and looks akin to any of our websites designed by agencies. The saving on cost has allowed us to run a robust search campaign alongside this website
… we would definitely use this solution again!!"

Sam Beeton, major label artist goes direct-to-fan

At the age of 22, Sam Beeton is already a veteran of the music industry,
signing a massive deal with Sony Music when he was just 15, with highly
acclaimed releases under his belt, and 7 years of touring and prolific
writing.Despite his successes, and with more major labels snapping at
his heals, Sam has made the bold move to go direct-to-fan, that is,
become an independent artist and take control of his commercial and
creative future.

The direct-to-fan movement is changing the music industry, catalysed by
the ease with which anyone can build a band website on a platform
like d2mondo, and conduct their entire music career - sales, marketing
and fan club - for next to no cost and with no need for technical
skills.

Sam has created his own, innovative approach; A record club, so that
subscribers can receive his latest recording on CD, every month.

Within minutes of launching, the orders were pouring in.

Sam said "The reaction has been incredibly positive. Since I had the
idea to release music this way I've been very excited about it and I'm
sure other artists will soon begin to follow suit. When I finish a new
song, I can send it out that month rather than having to agonise for a
year over track listing, release dates and hairstyles as with
traditional album schedules. And because people have bought into the
record club for a year, I don't have to market each release over and
over. Even putting a new track on Myspace took a lot of telling people
it was there to get it heard. The monthly record club is also a godsend
creatively, as I know there will be an outlet for my work, and I can
strive to make it the very best each month. And of course, I'll be
putting in special bonus tracks and treats for people to hear. And as I
have my fans addresses, I know where to be touring the most!"

Rudy Tambala, CEO of d2mondo, said “Sam is part of the new wave of
artists that view the old music industry as less relevant to their aims
as professional musicians. They’re too well-informed to be hypnotized by
mass media, as entertaining as it may be. Technology is now so
simplified and so cheap that it provides the wherewithal to just get on
and do it; Web and social media are second nature to this generation.

We built d2mondo for exactly this kind of scenario, whereby
ground-breaking artists like Sam see that they have the option to build a
core fan base, cutting out the middleman, selling direct and
controlling their own image and their own message. It’s totally
refreshing. It’s a large part of the future of the emerging music
industry.”
